Abstract

Fourteen horizon reports published by New Media Consortium (NMC) in the U.S.since 2004 predict the impacts of emerging technologies on the field of higher education and actively respond to education reform brought by technologies in future development of high education.The 2017 Horizon Report predicts that the short-term trends of higher education in adopting technology are the growing popularity of blended learning designs and increasing importance of collaborative learning,the mid-term trends are a growing focus on measuring learning and redesigning learning spaces,and the longterm trends are advancing innovation-oriented culture and constant growth of deeper learning approach.The solvable challenges impeding technology adoption in higher education are improving digital literacy and integrating formal and informal learning,the tough challenges are narrowing achievement gap and advancing digital equity,and the grim challenges are managing outdated knowledge and rethinking the role of teachers.The report also predicts that six technologies will enter the mainstream of higher education in next five years,namely,adaptive learning technologies and mobile learning (in one year);the internet of things (IoT) and next-generation LMS (in next two to three years);and artificial intelligence (AI) and natural user interfaces (NUIs) (in next four to five years).The development of higher education in the future needs to promote the application of new technologies,give full play to the revolutionary impact of technologies on education,reshape business processes to make fundamental changes in ways of learning,teaching and management,promote the formation of innovation-oriented culture,and stimulate teachers' and students' innovation vitality so as to realize the innovation and development of education.
