Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of plume poppy (Macleaya cordata) on the performance of lactating sows.A total of 30 Landrace × Yorkshire × Duroc sows with similar body weight,parity,and expected date of confinement were randomly allotted to 3 treatments,and fed a basal diet and the same diet supplemented with 40 mg/kg plume poppy extract or powder.The results showed that the extract and powder increased (P＜0.05) average daily feed intake of sows during lactating period,but backfat thickness did not differ.The extract and powder supplementation increased (P＜0.05) birth litter weight,but only the extract increased average body weight at birth and litter weight and size at 5 and 21 d (P＜0.05).The powder decreased diarrhea rate of piglets (P＜0.05),which was also slightly reduced by the extract.No mortality occurred in the extract group.It was concluded that plume poppy and its extract increased feed intake of lactating sows and birth litter weight and size,decreased diarrhea rate.关键词
