Abstract

Carbon fiber composite material(CFRP),which has been widely used in the aviation manufacturing industry,has a poor conductivity.So,it makes lightning current difficult to go out quickly when subjected to lightning current.The resistance heat produced by the lightning current in the CFRP will cause serious heat ablation damage.Consequently,to study the lightning damage mechanism of carbon fiber composite material by simulation and experiment,we established a three-dimensional finite element model of aviation CFRP subjected to lightning current to characterize the damage area and damage depth by the distribution of temperature field.Thereby,we studied the lightning damage of the IM600/133 CFRP by the finite software ABAQUS.The simulation results indicate that both the damage depth along the normal direction and temperature field of the composite material increase rapidly at the initial stage of lightning strike.After the lightning current reaches the peak,the increasing rate becomes slow.The temperature changing law of the increasing stage is similar to the changing law of lightning current increasing stage.To the laminated CFRP,the lightning current mainly propagates along the direction with the max conductivity on surface of the material,and the heat flux also propagates along the material surface,thus the heat damage mainly distributes on the surface of the CFRP.To the woven CFRP,the damage area distributes as circle approximately,and the center of the circle is the lightning strike point.The comparison of the simulation and experiment show a good consistence between them,verifying the reasonability of the finite model.
