Abstract

Civil engineering is a traditional discipline and the primary teaching method in colleges is a combination use of classroom lectures and laboratory experiments.The courses of Structural Experiment Techniques for Disaster Mitigation and Advanced Experimental Techniques in Structural Engineering are taught,respectively,for undergraduate and graduate students in College of Civil Engineering,Tongji University.Though the integrated use lectures and laboratory testing,these courses are expected to train student to equip basic structural testing skills.However,due to the limitation of experimental resources,the teaching effectiveness is under expectation.A more active teaching environment can be created by adopting the virtual reality technology.It therefore not only solves the teaching resource limitation problem but also improves teaching quality through arousing students' enthusiasm.This paper takes the lectures on sensing techniques in civil engineering as an example to introduce relevant ideas about how to use the virtual reality technology to promote teaching effectiveness.It presents a virtual simulation platform designed for this teaching task.With the aid of the virtual reality technology,basic principles of sensing technology in civil engineering are taught and some newly developed sensing technologies such as wireless sensor,digital image correlation,laser,radar,etc.,are introduced.
