Research on Treating Anxiety and Depression before Examinations among Senior High Students Using Escitalopram Combined with Cognitive Behavior Therapy

Abstract

Objective:To explore into the effect of escitalopram combined with cognitive behavioral therapy(CBT) on anxiety and depression before examinations among senior high students in Tangshan.Methods:A certain number of senior high students,who suffered from anxiety as well as depression before examinations received a therapy in Tangshan No.5 hospital.They were divided randomly into two groups,ie.the control group and the experiment group.The experiment group was treated with escitalopram combined with cognitive behavioral therapy(CBT)while the control group was treated only with escitalopram.Their levels of anxiety and depression were evaluated respec-tively before the treatment,at the end of four weeks'treatment,at the end of eight weeks'treatment and at the end of twelve weeks of treatment with Hamilton anxiety scale(HAMA),Hamilton depression scale(HAMD)and drug side effects scale(TESS).Then the results were statistically analyzed and compared.Results:Before the treatment,there was no significant difference between the HAMA scores of the two groups(t =-0.14,P >0.05);After four weeks of treatment,the HAMA scores of the experiment group were significantly lower than those of the control group(t =-2.23,P <0.05)and than the scores before treatment(t = 2.23,P <0.05 );after eight weeks of treatment,no clear difference was found between the HAMA scores of the two groups(t =-0.74,P >0.05)and the HAMA scores of the experiment group were significantly lower than that before the treatment(t =2.58,P <0.05);after twelve weeks of treatment,the HAMA scores of the experiment group were lower than those of the control group again,and the difference was significant(t =-2.26,P <0.05),and compared with the scores before the treatment,the difference had the largest significance(t = 5.98,P < 0.01 ).Before the treatment,no significant difference was found between the HAMD scores of both groups(t =1.73,P >0.05 );after four weeks of treatment,the HAMD scores of the experi-ment group were significantly lower than that in the control group (t =-2.16,P <0.05)or before the treatment(t =2.10,P <0.05 );after eight weeks of treatment,no significant difference was found between the HAMD scores of both groups(t =0.22,P >0.05),the HAMD scores of the experiment group were much lower than before the treatment(t =2.38,P <0.05);after twelve weeks of treatment,no significant difference was found between the HAMDscores of the two groups(t =-0.16,P >0.05),the HAMD scores of the experiment group were significant differentfrom those before the treatment(t =2.03,P <0.05).Neither group had serious adverse drug reaction(χ2 =0.32,P >0.05).Conclusion:Escitalopram combined with CBT treatment works fast on anxiety and depression before examinationsand shows a positive effect,which is better than the effect of using escitalopram alone.And the combined therapyshows more tolerance and higher safety among the patients.
