The expression and significance of matrix metalloproteinase-9 and tissue inhibitory factor-1 in young epilepsy patient with generalized tonic-clonic seizure

Abstract
Objective To observe the correlation of matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) and tissue inhibitory factor-1 (TIMP-1) with generalized tonic-clonic seizure in young epilepsy patient.Methods Fifty 15-28 years old epileptic patients with generalized tonic-clonic seizure were enrolled.Plasma levels of MMP-9,TIMP-1 were measured 3,6 and 12 h after seizure,and were compared with those of age matched symptom stability control group and healthy control group.Results The plasma levels of MMP-9 in young epilepsy patients with generalized tonic-clonic seizure 3,6,12 h after seizure [(64.69±15.23),(90.21±22.74),(67.51±18.36) μg/L,respectively] were significantly higher than those in symptom stability control group [(44.27±13.55) μg/L] and healthy control group [(42.24±13.63) μg/L] (P<0.05);with the 6 h being the highest.The ratio of MMP-9/TIMP-1 behaved as the same.Although there were no difference among 3,6,and 12 h after seizure (P>0.05),the levels of TIMP-1 in epilepsy group were significantly higher than those in symptom stability control group and healthy control group (P<0.05).The use of antiepileptic drugs did not affect the expression of MMP-9/TIMP-1 (P>0.05).Conclusions The imbalance of MMP-9/TIMP-1 after seizure in young epilepsy patients with tonic-clonic seizure may be mainly due to the increased expression of MMP-9,which is positively correlated with the duration of attack and is not affected by antiepileptic drugs.关键词
