Abstract

Sweet corn (Zea mays L.Seccharata Sturt) (Jintian 688) and normal corn (Zea mays L.Indentata Sturt) (Yedan 13),were used as the materials to investigate differences in caryopsis growth and the development process of endosperm amyloplast.The main results were as fallows:In the development of caryopsis,the change of grain dry weight and starch content showed an "S" shaped pattern,but both inJintian 688 was far lower than that inYedan 13.The change of soluble sugar content was in single-peak type in both varieties.The content was lower in Jintian 688 during early stage,but higher in Yedan13 during late period.The starch accumulation in the endosperm cells of two varieties was different along with the different parts.Compared with Yedan 13,the development of endosperm amyloplasts was slower and the amyloplast was smaller and poorly enriched in Jintian 688.Most endosperm amyloplasts were spherical-shaped and loosely arranged in the matured caryopsis of Jintian 688.However,the endosperm amyloplasts were polyhedral,well enriched and filled with protein body in Yedan 13.In Jintian 688,the endosperm amyloplasts were poorly enriched,and the matured caryopses shriveled severely because of the dehydration.Nevertheless,the caryopsis was horse-tooth-shaped with higher appearance transparency and the endosperm amyloplasts were well enriched in Yedan 13.
