Abstract

Alumina ceramic supports were fabricated at a low temperature (≤1500℃) using a Ti(SiO4)2coated alumina powder with the median size of 20μm as a starting material. The sintering characteristic was determined by a thermal expansion instrument. The phase composition, micro-structure, pore size distribution and flexural strength were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, mercury porosimetry and universal mechanical test, respectively. The results indicate that the coated alumina powder exhibits the excellent sintering activity. The sintering process of alumina particles was realizedvia solid state reaction between alumina and titania. The obtained supports show a homogeneous micro-structure. The alumina ceramic supports prepared at 1400℃ have an open porosity of 33.2% , average pore size of 3.69μm, mechanical strength of 57.11MPa and nitrogen gas flux of 959m3/(m2·h) under a trans-membrane pressure of 0.1MPa, and they also exhibit the excellent chemical resistance.
