Abstract

The Frost heaving and thawing settlement of high speed railway subgrade in cold region directly affect the high-speed,safe and stable operation of the train.Based on the theories of unsaturated soil seepage and heat transfer,the moisture and temperature fields of frozen soil are coupled to establish the moisture-temperature coupling differential equation for frozen soil.Based on the similarity between isotropic volume expansion of soil and the thermal expansion of material,subgrade frost heaving model is established.The ice content is calculated by water-heat coupling model and the frost heaving deformation of subgrade is calculated by hydrodynamic frost heaving model.Numerical calculation and measured results show that the subgrade frost heaving deformation law is basically the same.The frost heaving peak values all occur when subgrade reaches the maximum freezing depth and freezing layer begins to melt bidirectionally,and the validity of the numerical model is verified.The frost heaving deformation of three different kinds of subgrade at the moment of the strongest frost heaving effect has been calculated according to the established numerical model respectively,namely,subgrade only with insulation board,subgrade with both insulation board and asphalt concrete pavement as well as subgrade with insulation board,asphalt concrete pavement and gravel.Results show that the frost heaving deformation of subgrade with insulation board,asphalt concrete pavement and gravel is the minimum (the maximum value is 1.3 mm) while the subgrade with insulation board is the maximum (the maximum value is 3.2 mm).The sub grade with insulation board,asphalt concrete pavement and gravel is recommended to be applied for high speed railway in cold region to minimize the frost heaving deformation of subgrade.
