Abstract

The dating and analysis of pollen and phytolith were conducted for the sample taken from the Pingliang profile located in Dazhai Village, Pingliang County, Gansu Province, Northwest China. Four types of pollens (i.e.,Picea,Pinus, Gramineae andArtemisia) which showed high content and had the typical environmental indication significance were compared with four types of phytoliths (i.e., Fan-shaped, Rectangle, Rhabdolith and Acicula). The results showed that, although the overall trend of climatic environment indicated by pollen and phytolith records was similar, yet there existed some difference. The climatic zone with higher content of pollen well corresponds to phytolith climate zone, reflecting the accurate climate types. When the content of other pollens was low, and pollens with strong transmission capacity and no-representativeness (e.g.,Pinus) existed, the accuracy of climatic environment indicated by the pollen was low. However, the content of phytolith in the whole loess profile was higher, so the climate characteristics reflected was more accurate. In contrast to the pollen in the Loess Plateau where the pollen content is low, the phytolith is an effective tool for the study of paleoclimate.
