Effect of wave breaking on the sea surface temperature simulation in the North Pacific

Abstract
In this paper, wave parameters in the North Pacific were simulated by the WAVEWATCH III and were combined with NDBC buoy data verification. We found that the simulated significant wave height is highly precise. Based on the modified model of whitecap coverage dissipation, turbulence kinetic energy (TKE) fluxes due to wave breaking were calculated using the simulated significant wave height, wave period, and friction velocity. The in-fluence of surface wave breaking could be introduced into ocean model sbPOM by modifying the existing surface boundary condition of the TKE equation and specifying its input. The effects of wave breaking on the SST simula-tion in the North Pacific were also investigated. The results indicated that wave breaking can improve the accuracy of the ocean model sbPOM on the North Pacific sea surface temperature simulation and it plays an important role in providing accurate lower boundary conditions in atmospheric models.关键词
