Abstract

This experiment was conducted to study the effect of music on growth performance, stress and immune in female Holstein calves, which was aimed to provide a theoretical information for welfare of calves during rearing.Twelve calves, at the age of 6~10 days old, were randomly assigned to two treatments: control group (no music), and music group, of which there was six calves.For calves of music group, soothing music (Silence with Sound from Nature) was played during 8∶00~11∶00 am and 14∶00~17∶00 pm every day, the volume of the music was 50~60 dB, whereas no music for calves in control group.All the experimental calves were raised with the same condition.The results were as follows: average daily feed intake (ADFI), average daily gain (ADG), body height increment of calves in music group were significantly higher than that of control group (P<0.05).In addition, there was no significant difference in salivary cortisol (COR), α-amylase (AMY), immunoglobulin A (IgA) and immunoglobulin G (IgG) levels between the two groups in 14th day during experiment (P>0.05).Nevertheless, salivary COR and IgA level of claves in music group was significantly higher than those in control group in 28 th day during experiment.(P<0.05).These results indicated that music had a positive effect on the growth performance, immune, and attenuating effect on stress for calves.
