Simulation and optimization of product separation process for a 520 kt/a methanol-to propylene (MTP) plant

Abstract

The product separation process for the 2400kt/a MTP pilot plant was simulated by using the RK-SOAVE thermodynamic model and different modules of Aspen Plus. The simulated results were compared with the data of pilot plant, showing that the error was less than 5%, and the reliability of the model was verified. Based on above results, the separation process for a large-scale plant of 520kt/a was simulated. Dividing wall column and heat pump distillation were applied to simplify the refining process and reduce energy consumption. The result showed that the new separation process could obtain the polymerization grade propylene with a mass fraction of 99.78%, while reducing energy consumption of 31.57%.
