Abstract

Low lightning resisting level and complex structure of distribution network are weak links of lightning protection of power grid. Direct lightning stroke and induced flashover can easily lead to lightning overvoltage, resulting in electrical equipment damage, line trip and other adverse consequences. In recent years, although number of new lightning protection measures appear, but there are still lightning trip-out rate increase, short-lived service period and many other difficulties in engineering practice. By studying mass and energy flow change characteristic of free arc under condition of thin tube restriction, it is found out that self-expanding air flow accumulated by compression effect can accelerate de-ionization of free arc and quickly cut short-circuit arc. Through simulation and experimental verification, arc-extinguishing device in actual line operation was analyzed. It is concluded that compression effects can accumulate self-expanding air flow. In experiment and simulation the arc were reliably extinguished within 1000 μs. Application of arc-extinguishing device in 10 kV line achieved excellent operating results, and lightning trip-out rate was greatly reduced.
