Abstract

Nano-sized silver/hydroxyapatite/diatomite composite ceramics were prepared by anin-situcomposition method. The microscopic structure, pore size distribution, silver release and bactericidal properties of the composite ceramic were investigated. The results show that short rod-like hydroxyapatite (HA) particles distribute uniformly on the surface or in the pore of diatomite particles. The spherical nano-particles of silver with an average diameter (5.79±2.46) nm uniformly disperse in the composite ceramic. The average pore diameter, median pore diameter and porosity of the composite ceramic are 510 nm, 1521.90 nm and 52.23%, respectively. The composite ceramic for sustainable and stable release of silver could be a promising candidate for water treatment due to its bactericidal effect against the Escherichia coli.
