Evaluation of Interfacial Bond Strength of Thermal Barrier Coating by Improved Cross-bonded Method

Abstract
Interfacial bond strength is one of the vital mechanical properties of thermal barrier coating. The cross-bonded method, which can measure the interfacial tensile and shear bond strength, has attracted recent attention. However, some imperfects of this method were found in practice. In this paper, improved cross-bonded sample and fixture were represented and the tests were carried out to 8YSZ thermal barrier coating. The results show that the tensile bond strength of 8YSZ thermal barrier coating is (23.68±1.56) MPa and the shear bond strength is (25.88±2.14)MPa, and the type of fracture is both interface/coating fracture. In the shear tests, interface is subjected to a pure shear stress, without the influence from the strength of adhesives. And an improved technique effectively avoids a possible friction between the fixture and sample in tensile bond strength test, thus enhancing the accuracy of results.关键词
