Abstract

Wood modification involves the action of physical,chemical or biological agent upon the wood material,resuiting in a desired property enhancement during the service life of the modified wood.Wood modification can also expand the application and increase the additional value of wood,especially for the fast-growing wood.The improvement of physical and mechanical properties of wood mainly depends on the wood cell wall modification which increases the wood packing density by impregnating modifier into wood cell wall and swelling the structure via physical and chemical reactions.This progress is affected by the components and structure of wood cell wall.Therefore,it is an efficient approach to promote the penetration of modifier into wood cell walls and the interfacial interaction between wood cell wall and modifiers.In the physical treatment,the modifier diffuses into the wood cell walls and polymerizes subsequently.Property improvements occur primarily due to the bulking of the wood cell wall by the impregnating.The chemical modification involves the chemical reaction of a reagent with the cell wall components,which can result in the formation of a single chemical bond with one hydroxy group,or cross-linking between two or more hydroxy groups.Moreover,some new technologies,such as nanotechnology and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP),have been applied to wood property enhancement.These technologies provide wood modification with new ideas and need to be investigated in depth.Recently,important wood cell wall modification methods have been developed with the advance of testing and analytical technology.This paper reviews the research progress in wood cell wall modification in three aspects:physical enhancement,chemical enhancement and nanotechnology.It would provide the wood industry with an outlook for the development trends and challenges of wood cell wall modification.
