Symptom and Stress Inventory for Chinese Women Undergoing ART Treatment:Development and Psychometric Test

Abstract
Objective To develop a reliable and valid scale to assess mental stress and related symptoms for Chinese women undergoing assisted reproductive technology (ART) treatment. Methods Through literature research and in-depth interview with 65 ART patients, 74 initial items of the Symptom and Stress Inventory for Infertility (SSII) were developed. To evaluate psychometric properties of the SSII, 104 ART patients were asked to complete the initial scale, along with Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Results Principal component analysis with varimax rotation and confirmatory factor analysis identified 2 symptom-related factors and 6 stress-related factors, consisting of 52 items. Scores of symptom subscale, stress subscale and 8 factors were positively correlated with BAI and BDI scores (r=0.38~0.85, all P<0.01). Cronbach α for the symptom and stress subscales were 0.93 and 0.96, respectively. ROC analysis indicated the implication of the symptom and stress subscales for screening clinical anxiety/depression, with the values of area under the curve being 0.93 and 0.92, and the cutoff scores being 30 and 74, respectively. Conclusion The SSII demonstrates satisfactory psychometric properties and could be served as a useful psychological self-assessment tool for Chinese women undergoing ART treatment. Further refinement of this new scale in larger samples of ART patients and establishment of a norm are warranted for clinical practice.关键词
