Abstract

Objective To evaluate the effect of empowerment-based education on self-care skills and adverse reaction in liver cancer patients after transcatheter arterial chemo-embolization (TACE) surgery. Methods With convenience sampling, 184 patients after TACE were selected and divided into intervention group (n=93) and control group (n=91) randomly; conventional nursing and health education were performed in control group but empowerment-based education was carried out in intervention group additionally; after intervention, patients ' self-care skills and adverse reaction in 2 groups were compared using Self-care Agency scale and Visual Analogue scale. Nausea and vomiting times and the use amount of antiemetic and anodyne were recorded and compared. Results The pain scores, self-care ability scores and each dimension score were no statistically significant in two group at the day of admission (P>0.05). Self-care ability scores and each dimension score of patients in intervention group were better than those in control group at discharge (P<0.05). Patients in intervention group had lower pain scores than those in control group at discharge (P<0.05),nausea and vomiting times and the amount of antiemetic and anodyne in intervention group were less than those in control group. Conclusion Empowerment-based education can significantly improve self-care skills and reduce adverse reaction in liver cancer patients after TACE surgery.
