Abstract

Polymer-stabilized blue-phase liquid crystal display (PSBP LCD) driven by conventional in-plane-switching (IPS) electrodes suffers from low transmittance due to the existence of dead zones.A floating electrode is introduced to enhance the lateral electric field on dead zone areas, so as to improve the peak transmittance of BP LCD device.The electro-optical properties of floating electrode enhanced protrusive IPS blue-phase LCD is analyzed by Techwiz3D simulation.The impact of electrode dimension, operation wavelength and misalignment of floating electrodes is investigated quantitatively.Our simulation results indicate that floating electrode increases the transmittance by 15% and the overall transmittance reaches ~90% for all three visible wavelengths (450 nm, 550 nm, 650 nm) employed for display applications.This makes blue-phase LCD a more competitive candidate for next generation display technology.
