Abstract

Objective To explore the effectiveness of the newly developed patent, landmark-based ruler for long-term central venous catheterization, in tunneled cuffed catheter of hemodialysis patients. Methods Sixty-two patients were randomly and evenly divided into two groups, the control group (n=31) and the experimental group (n=31).The patent ruler was used before operation for the experimental group, while catheter was used during operation for the control group. The amount of time required for the operation, the first attempt success rate, the blood volume during hemodialysis and the patient satisfaction with the position of catheter exit site were recorded for both groups. Results Mean time of operation for the experimental group was (24.8±2.97) minutes vs. (31.7±4.89) minutes for the control group (P<0.05). The first attempt success rate in the experimental group was 96.8% vs. 80.6% in the control group (P<0.05). The patient satisfaction score was (3.89±0.88) in the experimental group vs. (3.25±0.64) in the control group (P<0.05). Conclusion The landmark-based ruler for tunneled cuffed catheter makes the catheterization safer and more efficient by decreasing the amount of time required for operation, while enhancing the first time success rate and the patient satisfaction score. Thus it is worthy of clinical application.
