Exploration of Zhang Zhongjing's Flexible Use of Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei)

Abstract
Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) has the effects of purging ten different stagnations:dry stools,food stagnation,blood stagnancy,fluid retention,phlegm accumulation,toxic pathogens,dampness,heat pathogen,mass and lumps,and calculus.Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) can tonify and astringe healthy qi,calm down and harmonize the five zang-organs:protecting the liver and increasing choleresis,strengthening the spleen and harmonizing stomach qi,reinforcing the heart,protecting kidney and promoting bladder emptying,checking blood,eliminating the stale and producing the fresh.Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) is a herb used the most frequently by Zhang Zhongjing who attaches great importance to the dosage,preparation,decoction time and relevant matters needing attention.Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) is an effective herb which can cure macronosia,rescue critical cases if it is properly used.However,if one is not familiar with its property,flavor,therapeutic effects and usage and dosage,he cannot use this herb to its utmost efficacy but bring about bad effects.Raw one with bitter taste and cold nature can promote purgation.Once processed with wine,its effects change from descending to ascending,purging to astringing.It's also artful in the determination of dosage.Large dose can purge while small dose can astringe.Therefore,ascending or descending and purging or astringing all lie in the processing and dosage.This idea should be understood by each doctor before the use of Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei).关键词
