摘要

Abstract

The energy level structure of trivalent praseodymium ions (Pr3+) determines that Pr3+ions can generate blue, green, orange, red, deep red light, and other colors in various wavelengths. With the development of laser diodes (LDs), blue LDs become commercialized. It is possible to generate visible lasers by directly pumping Pr3+ ions doped gain medium with blue LD as a pump source. This method has some advantages like simple design and compact structure and is beneficial to the development of miniaturized LD-pumped all-solid-state visible lasers. In this paper, we mainly reviewed recent development on visible continuous wave lasers, visible Q-switched lasers and visible mode-locked lasers of Pr3+ ions doped fluoride crystals. We also represented the application of two-dimension (2D) materials as visible optical modulators with MoS2 as the representative in Q-switching and mode-locking. A design criteria for novel 2D optical modulators was summarized. In addition, the application perspectives on Pr3+ ions doped fluoride crystals in visible lasers were also introduced.
