Abstract

Inoculated mature granular sludge and coking wastewater (carbon source) were used to study the characteristics of organics degradation in an anaerobic, simultaneous denitrification and methanogenesis system under different C/Ns.Test results showed that:1) Pollutants in coking wastewater could be effectively removed using anaerobic simultaneous denitrification and methanogenesis.2) When the C/N ratio was 3 or 6,only denitrification occurred, without any methane production in the reaction.Anaerobic simultaneous denitrification and methanogenesis was observed when the C/N ratio was 12 or 50.3) Denitrification had priority in this system,and the excess carbon was degraded by methanogenesis after denitrification was completed.Accumulation of NO2--N was observed during denitrification.The maximum accumulation rate of NO2-N, and the methanogenic activity recovery time, were both reduced when the C/N ratio increased.4) The rate of carbon consumption during denitrification was greater than during methanogenesis in this system.Denitrification helped stabilize the pH,lower the ORP, and promote methane bacteria breeding;so the efficiency of organics removal with the anaerobic simultaneous methanogenesis and denitrification system was higher than with a single system for anaerobic methanogenesis.
