Abstract

In order to improve the anaerobic digestion capacity to produce biogas from duckweed, the use of single and mixed substrates of duckweed and excess sludge, were compared for use in the anaerobic digestion process.The results showed the acidification phase of methane-producing process could be shortened, and that the actual values of cumulative gas production was 11% higher than the calculated value when the two substrates were mixed.In addition, the influence of substrate pretreatment and the ratio of substrates and inoculum for the anaerobic process were researched.The results showed that the methane yield from duckweed with hot alkali pretreatment was 8% higher than from the untreated group, and that the anaerobic digestion period needed to produce biogas could be cut down at once.Meanwhile, when the ratio of substrates and inoculum was 1 ∶ 1, the pH of the whole reaction process was > 6.00, and the volatile fatty acids (VFAs) level was the highest, which contributed to the methane production.The maximum total biogas and total methane yield was (3309 and 1883) mL, respectively.These were (151 mL and 304 mL) more than those of the worst group (1 ∶ 2.5), with 151 and 304 mL.
