Removal of acetic acid by electro adsorption with activated carbon fiber electrodes

Abstract
Acetic acid is an important metabolic compound produced during anaerobic digestion of organic wastes for hydrogen production.Removal of acetic acid is of great significance for eliminating product inhibition and improving hydrogen productivity.In this paper, for the first time, electro-sorption technology was applied to remove acetic acid, and its feasibility was explored.Using activated carbon fiber as the electrode material, the effects of voltage, electrode distance, flow rate, and initial concentration were studied for the electro adsorption removal of acetic acid.The isotherm and kinetics characteristics of this process were analyzed.The results showed that at voltage of 0.9 V, plate spacing 1 cm, and flow rate 21.5 mL · min-1;the pH of an acetic acid solution at a concentration of 1.75 mmol · L-1, was raised from pH 3.73 to the optimum range 4.5 to 5.5 favored by hydrogen-producing bacteria.The removal rate reached > 95%.It is feasible to prevent the accumulation of acetic acid through electro adsorption, and the isothermal adsorption process fit well with the Freundlich formula (i.e., the adsorption process is in compliance with the first-order kinetic equation).These results are significantly meaningful for optimizing the process of hydrogen production through anaerobic digestion.关键词
