Abstract

Length of UHV AC half-wavelength transmission line is much longer than normal transmission lines. Electromagnetic wave propagation time and channel delay is also longer after fault. Its fault electric characteristics are nonlinear and non-monotonic. Traditional protection theory and action performance cannot meet its requirements. UHV AC half-wavelength transmission line protection scheme is proposed in this paper. The scheme, using spatial-temporal characteristics of the line, consists of one-terminal transient protection and two-terminal transient protection, including blocking type, ranging type and permissive type protections. It eliminates impacts caused by electromagnetic wave propagation time and channel delay. Its action speed meets the standard of UHV transmission line protection. With this scheme, the fault of UHV AC half-wavelength transmission line can be cleared quickly.
