Abstract
With development of flexible HVDC technology, a number of flexible DC transmission projects have been built over the world in recent years. However, flexible HVDC projects have to use expensive transmission cables, because modular multilevel converter (MMC) based on traditional half-bridge sub-module cannot suppress DC fault current. Aiming at DC fault ride-through technology, a lot of novel voltage source converters (VSCs) are proposed by domestic and foreign scholars. In order to provide a theoretical basis for designers to quantify new topologies, this paper presents a comprehensive evaluation index for DC fault ride-through capability of the new VSCs. The evaluation index uses fault current suppression time and voltage deviation of sub-module after fault to characterize fast recovery capability of VSCs. Additional investment cost and extra running loss of the converters are considered synthetically. Finally, three application methods of the comprehensive evaluation index are presented, and six different topologies are compared laterally, and validity and universality of the evaluation index are verified.关键词
