Abstract

The purpose of the study is to reveal the causes,characteristics and regularity of the flood in Zhouzhi rearch of the Weihe River during last 120 years.Methods of field investigation,regional comparison and grain-size analysis are used.The floodplain sediment of ZZ1 profile in study area formed during the past 120 years.It's thickness is 2.2m and can be divided into 14 layers.It indicates that 14 flood events occurred during the past 120 years.The grain size of ZZ1 profile is larger than that in the lower reaches of Weihe River owning to its major components of coarse and medium sand except 30cm of silt and clay at the top.Coarse sand content is generally between 50% and 65%,and medium sand content is between 15% and 30%.The larger grain size indicates the stronger flood at the forming stage.The depth and scale of the 14 flood events in ZZ1 profile is in the order of 9th > 5th > 6th > 4th > 7th > 3rd > 14th > 8th > 1st > 10th > llth > 13th > 12th > 2nd.The flood events were caused by the strong summer monsoon and an annual precipitation that was increased to 800-900mm then.
