Abstract

The Yeshan skarn-type boron deposit,located in Nanjing,Jiangsu Province,is one of the most representative boron deposits in China.In this paper,we studied mineral assemblage,petrographic textures,and chemical compositions of borate minerals and associated gangue minerals from this boron deposit,and discussed possible formation mechanisms of this boron deposit.The ore minerals in Yeshan boron deposit are ludwigite and szaibelyite.Ludwigite occurs in the early skarn stages as fibrous or needle-like aggregates.Szaibelyite occurs mainly as flakes and fibers.Four types of the szaibelyite have been distinguished:(1) Amorphous szaibelyite-Ⅰ,usually associated with serpentine;(2) Net-like szaibelyite-Ⅱ,cross-cutting or surrounding early flake-like szaibelyite-Ⅰ;(3) Szaibelyite-Ⅲ,which forms banded texture with fine-grained magnetite;and (4) Interstitial szaibelyite-Ⅳ,which fills the interstitial regions between other phases.We suggest that net-like szaibelyite-Ⅱ and earlier flake-like szaibelyite-Ⅰ could have formed by the interaction between B-rich hydrothermal fluid and brucite.Szaibelyite-Ⅲ could have formed by the interaction between B-rich fluid and earlier ludwigite.Interstitial szaibelyite-Ⅳ could have directly precipitated from the late-stage B-rich fluids.
