Investigation of the roles and usage of clinical nurse specialists working in secondary and tertiary hospitals in Hubei Province

Abstract
Objective:To investigate the roles and usage of clinical nurse specialists(CNS) working in secondary and tertiary hospitals in Hubei Province,and to provide references for usage and management of CNS.Methods:In Hubei province quality control center,the self-made questionnaire of specialist nurse status was used to investigate 121 hospitals of grade two and three in the whole province,which included 6 aspects:the number,distribution,function,arrangement,treatment and hospital support of specialist nurses.Results:As of May 2014,there were 2 235 specialist nurses in 121 hospitals surveyed in the province.The top 3 specialist nurses were in operation room,intensive care unit(ICU),and peripherally inserted central venous catheter(PICC).The func tions of specialist nurses included clinical nursing,teaching,health education,nursing management and extended services.95.04％ of the hospitals assigned specialist nurses to the duty nurse posts.59.50％ of hospitals quali fied nurses for salary increases;121 hospitals provided annual special nursing training fees/nursing special funds,an average of 236 thousand and 400 yuan.66.94％ hospitals attached great importance to the development of specialist nurses.55.37 ％ hospitals set up specialist development paths for specialist nurses.Conclusions:The number of specialist nurses in Hubei province had reached a certain scale,but the distribution was uneven.The function of speualist nurses was mainly clinical nursing,teaching and health education,and the function of researchers,reformers and coordinators were not obvious.Each hospital still needed to study the management system of human and post matching,and the specialist nurses should strengthen the ability training of nursing research and evidence-based nursing so as to give full play to their professional value and promote the development of nursing science.关键词
