Abstract

In high-power inverters, discontinuous pulse width modulation (DPWM) could increase the equivalent switching frequency, improve control performance of the system and reduce the difficulty of filter design with the same switching losses, but its neutral point balancing control had not been well resolved. To address this issue, this paper took the three-level DPWM1 as an example. The realization method of the three-level DPWM1 based on the space vector pulse width modulation was analyzed. The influence of three-level DPWM1 and its redundant vector sequence (DPWM3) on the midpoint potential was quantitatively analyzed by using the neutral point balance control method of continuous modulation. A hybrid modulation strategy based on DPWM1 and DPWM3 was proposed, which could effectively control the balance of neutral point potential. During the adjustment period, the switching frequency was almost constant, and hysteresis control was adopted to switch between the two modulation algorithms. The common vectors of each small sector of the two modulation algorithms were selected as the switching vectors, which could reduce the extra switching action caused by the switch. Finally, the simulation and experimental results verify the feasibility of the modulation strategy.
