Abstract

A new process for 2-(2-dimethylaminoethoxy) ethanol synthesis via reaction of ethylene oxide and dimethyl amine was developed, which also produced 2-dimethylaminoethanol as a byproduct. Effects of reaction temperature, reaction pressure, molar ratio of ethylene oxide to dimethyl amine and solvent on product distribution were studied. Under optimized conditions of n(C2H7N):n(C2H4O)=1:1~2, 80℃ and 1.2MPa, the conversion of dimethyl amine is over 95% and the conversion of ethylene oxide is over 80%. The weight ratio of 2-(2-dimethylaminoethoxy) ethanol to 2-dimethylaminoethanol is in the range of 0~4, which increases with the increase of molar ratio between ethylene oxide and dimethyl amine. Therefore, the product distribution can be controlled by changing molar ratio of reactants.
