Abstract

Raw palygorskite (PG) resources are abundant in China with lower price than traditional catalyst carriers (such as activated carbon and rare-earth-containing carriers). Raw PG was selected as a catalyst carrier in this study. The specific surface area, pore volume and pore diameter of PG are increased by 74.1%, 204%, and 74.3% respectively after purification, which further increase by 24.5%, 23.4%, and 11.1% respectively after acid modification. The treated PG was loaded with Fe3+ and Mn2+ with a sol-gel method and was used with ozonation to treat simulated methyl orange wastewater. The removal of color and chemical oxygen demand (COD) of the wastewater are 99.96% and 92.47%, respectively. Kinetic results show the degradation of simulated methyl orange wastewater is of first-order kinetics model, and the reaction mechanism follows the radical oxidation mechanism. The Fe-Mn loaded PG catalyst combined with ozonation can be used for color and COD removal of dye wastewater.
