Effects of Piper Sarmentosum Extract on the Growth Performance, Carcass Characteristics and Meat Quality in Wenchang Broiler Chickens

Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to determine the effect of dietary addition of Piper sarmentosum extract (PSE) on growth performance,carcass characteristics and meat quality of Wenchang broiler chickens.One hundred and eighty 1-day-old Wenchang broiler chickens were brooded together for 2 weeks,and then randomly allocated into four treatment groups with three replicates of 15 birds each.Birds were fed a basal diet of corn and soybeans supplemented with PSE at 0,50,100 and 200 mg/kg for 11 weeks.The results revealed that diet addition of PSE at 100 mg/kg increased the ADG and ADFI of birds during 6 to 8 week (P<0.05).Dietary supplementation with PSE reduced the abdominal fat ratio of birds.Meanwhile,dietary supplementation with PSE at 100 to 200 mg/kg reduced drip loss and shear force,and increased the intramuscular fat content of breast muscle (P<0.05).The conclusion showed that dietary PSE supplementation at 50 to 200 mg/kg could increase ADG and ADFI of Wenchang broiler chickens during 6 to 8 week,and improve the meat quality of breast muscle.关键词
