Abstract

Aqueous reaction of potassium ferrate with sulfamethoxazole is introduced,which is investigated for evaluating the effects of ferrate dosage,pH value and reaction time on removal of sulfamethoxazole.Results indicate that sulfamethoxazole can be removed by ferrate efficiently.At a pH value of 7.0,91.5% of 0.02 mmol/L sulfamethoxazole is removed after 10 min oxidation by dosing 0.1 mmol/L potassium ferrate.Sulfamethoxazole removal efficiency and reaction rate increase with the increasing dose of ferrate.The pH value of the solution has a great influence on the oxidation of sulfamethoxazole,and the reaction performs well in neutral and weak acid condition.Under different pH conditions,the effect of reaction time on sulfamethoxazole removal efficiency is obviously different.At pH value < 7.0,although oxidative ability of ferrate is high,the ferrate is highly unstable.Therefore,reaction rate is fast and reaction time is short.Oxidative ability of the ferrate decreases and the stability increases with the increase of pH value.As a result,at pH value >7.0,reaction rate is much slower and reaction time is longer than that at pH value <7.0.
