Abstract

It is crucial to characterize the spatial structure and morphology of graphite for predicting and improving properties of vermicular graphite cast iron (VGI). In this study, based on VGI with different vermiculation percent (61.0%, 68.9%, 82.0%and 92.2%respectively), the three-dimensional morphology of graphite was reconstructed by means of X-Ray tomography (XRT) and the connectivity of graphite was quantitatively characterized. And then the relationship between connectivity and properties was discussed in detail. The results show that the larger the size of graphite in VGI is, the more obvious coral feature is. The connectivity of graphite is higher and higher with the increasing of vermiculation percent. In addition, compared to two dimensional vermiculation percent, the three dimensional connectivity is more accurate and comprehensive for characterizing the spatial structure and morphology of graphite. It is of great reference value for the preparation of high performance VGI.
