Abstract

A representative fault-crossing exposed steel penstock (FCESP) in water diversion project was modeled to explain load transferring mechanism in poor sliding-condition (PSC) zones .Two finite element models were developed .In one model ,PSC zones were distinguished by hinge supports ,and in the other one pier with membranes between steel and concrete were used .The results show that , compared with hinge supports ,piers with membranes can help reduce expansion joints compensations and homogenize stress within steel penstock cross section .The expansion joints compensations and sliding behavior on sliding supports are dependent on friction coefficient between the penstock and the membrane markedly .However ,the stress status would not change .Therefore ,pier with membranes between steel and concrete can be adopted as PSC support more reasonably and feasibly than hinge support .The friction coefficient between steel and membrane should be recognized as an important de-sign parameter ,and the expansion joints compensation and sliding distance on sliding supports need to be focused to determine it .
