Abstract

Ecological niche is a fundamental theory of modern ecology and two important aspects are niche breadth and niche overlap.The concept applies to ecological differentiation within a population across an environmental gra-dient.The objective of this study was to explore phytoplankton community structure and the relationships between species and utilization of environmental resources in Wuliangsuhai Lake.Niche breadth and overlap of dominant summer and winter phytoplankton species in Wuliangsuhai Lake were analyzed using the formulations of Levin and Petraitis.In July 2011 and February 2012 , phytoplankton sampling was carried out from 09 :00 to 15 :00 at 10 sampling sites on Wuliangsuhai Lake.Sites were located at the lake entrance and exit, the different morphologi-cal sections, water functional areas and hydrologic controls.A total of 40 phytoplankton belonging to 35 genera and 7 phyla were identified during the investigation, with significant variation in species composition between summer and winter.In summer, 37 phytoplankton species from 33 genera were observed with dominance by Chlorophyta (15 species, 14 genera) , while in winter, 24 species from 21 genera were observed with dominance by Chlorophy-ta (8species, 7 genera) and Bacillariophyta (6 species, 6 genera).The total phytoplankton density was (3.62 ± 4.12) ×107 cell/L in summer and (1.32 ±0.98) ×107 cell/L in winter, with an average value of (2.47 ±3.14) ×107 cell/L over the two seasons.The niche breadth of Coelastrum microporum, Scenedesmus mey, Phormidium tenu, Oscillatoria vauch(>3.6) was relatively wide in summer and the niche breadth of Synedra ehrenberg, Eugle-na caudate( >5.0 ) was wide in winter, indicating that Coelastrum microporum, Scenedesmus mey, Phormidium tenu, Oscillatoria vauch had broader tolerances and better use of environmental resources in summer, while Synedra ehrenberg, Euglena caudate were more competitive in winter.Niche overlap for the same species was significantly different between summer and winter.Analysis of the ecological response rate indicates that the growth space of dominant species in summer expanded, except for Navicula bory, and the growth space of Phormidium tenu was lar-gest, followed by Spirulina princeps.The growth space of Synedra ehrenberg, Monochrysis skuja, and Cryptomonas ovata receded in winter and the growth space of Phormidium tenu was largest.Canonical correspondence analysis ( CCA) shows that the growth of Phormidium tenu and Spirulina princeps depended strongly on water temperature and Synedra ehrenberg growth depends more on pH.The abundance of most phytoplankton species decreased with increased salt concentration.
