Abstract

Mudstone with low clay mineral content that is considered to be non-expansive in the existing railway codes is in fact expansive. The deformation of expansive mudstone is destructive potentially for ballastless track of high-speed railway that has stringent requirement for deformation. This paper took the second line of Lanzhou to Xinjiang Railway as the research object that exhibits heaving distress on the foundation of low clay minerals content of mudstone. Comparative experiments of non load expansion of undisturbed and reconstructed soils under different soil sample thickness and different water content were carried out. Experimental results show that the expansive soil swelling process can be divided into three stages, i.e., the stage of accelerating expansion of water absorption, the stage of slow expansion, and the stage of final stability. Under the same conditions, the amount of reconstructed soil's expansion is larger than that of undisturbed soil. Compared with the reconstructed soil, the water absorption of undisturbed soil is slower. When the proportion of soil sample thickness increases, the final expansion volume is not increased in proportion. According to the experimental results, the formula of the ratio of the volume of the undisturbed soil and the reconstituted soil considering the water content and the thickness of the soil sample was fitted.
