Peripheral blood levels of Apelin and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus complicated with carotid atherosclerosis and its clinical significance

Abstract
Objective To analyze the peripheral blood levels of Apelin and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein(hs-CRP) in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM) complicated with carotid atherosclerosis and its clinical significance.Methods Sixty-one elderly patients with T2DM were divided into atherosclerosis group (n=32) and non-atherosclerosis group(n=29) according to the ultrasound result of carotid artery.And 27 healthy individuals were enrolled as normal control group.The fasting serum Apelin level and whole blood hs-CRP level were measured and were compared among the three groups.The correlation of Apelin level with hs-CRP level was analyzed in the atherosclerosis group.Results The Apelin and hs-CRP levels decreased in the order of the atherosclerosis group ,the non-atherosclerosis group and the normal control group (P<0.05).The Apelin level positively correlated with the hs-CRP level in the atherosclerosis group (P<0.05).Conclusion The peripheral blood levels of Apelin and hs-CRP are elevated in the patients with T2DM complicated with carotid atherosclerosis.Apelin and cytokines might participate in the development of carotid atherosclerosis in the patients with T 2DM.关键词
