Effect of plasma treatment on surface properties of high temperature dried poplar veneers

Abstract
Through the high temperature drying,poplar veneer surfaces can undergo passivation and the surface activity of poplar veneer reduced.As a result,the plywood bonding strength was affected.In this paper,the atmospheric cold plasma was used to modify poplar veneer surfaces for better surface properties and bonding performance.The plywood was prepared by using the veneers that were high-temperature-dried and then plasma-treated.Two main parameters of plasma modification,i.e.,plasma processing rate and plasma processing power were adjusted for studying the influence on surface properties of poplar veneers and bonding strength of the modified plywood.The results showed that the plasma treatment can significantly improve the wettability of poplar veneer surfaces.The initial contact angle and equilibrium contact angle of urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin decreased by 18.2% and 17.8% when plasma processing power and processing rate were set to 4.5 kW and 2 m/min,respectively.While the initial contact angle and eqnilibrium contact angle of phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resin decreased by 40.4% and 38.8%,respectively.Correspondingly,the bonding strength of the plywood prepared by UF and PF resin increased by 56.0% and 51.5%,respectively.The results of further analysis showed that the content of carbonyl on plasma treated high-temperature-dried poplar veneer surfaces increased slightly.After the plasma treatment,the penetration depth of resin into high-temperature-dried poplar veneer significantly increased as well.The average penetration depth of the UF resin into interface increased by 80.0%,while the effective penetration depth of bonding interface increased by 61.9%.After the plasma treatment,the amount of carbonyl on the surface of high temperature dried poplar veneers was increased.关键词
