Abstract

The co-production of fumaric acid and fungal chitosan based on the simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) of alkali-treated corncob residues was investigated at high solid loading.Cellulase hydrolysis with a higher corncob substrate concentration resulted in a higher substrate concentration of glucose,which was benefit for the production of fumaric acid by Rhizopus oryzae.The SSF at 100 g/L substrate concentration of corncob by R.oryzae could produce 28.65 g/L of fumaric acid,which was 1.95 times than that from SSF at 50 g/L substrate concentration.After SSF,fungal chitosan was prepared from R.oryzae biomass by alkaline process.The deacetylation degree of R.oryzae chitosan was 90%.The viscosity ofR.oryzae chitosan (20 g/L) was 2 mPa·s.Weight-average molecular weight and number-average molecular weight of R.oryzae chitosan were 2 578 u and 1 532 u,respectively,measured by gel chromatography.The results of this study can provide a cost-effective approach for co-production of fumaric acid and fungal chitosan by SSF using R.oryzae from lignocellulosic materials.
