Comparative advantage and the spatial distribution of China's corn producing areas: Based on the data of 18 provinces from 1996 to 2015

Abstract

Based on the data of the total national and provincial crop areas and corn production areas and acreage yields in 1996-2015, this paper calculated the Production Concentration Index (PCI), Production Scale Index (PSI), Scale Advantage Index (SAI), Efifciency Advantage Index (EAI) and Aggregated Advantage Index (AAI) of 18 main corn producing provinces, and examined the spatial distribution and variation characteristics the comparative advantage of main corn producing provinces with the support of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology. Results show that: 1) after 2012, the ranks of PCI basically remained stable. 2) China's corn production is mainly concentrated in the North spring planting areas and Yellow River-Huaihe River summer planting areas. 3) From 1996 to 2015, the provinces with comparative advantage in AAI remained relatively stable, and the EAI of most provinces concentrated in the ranges of 0.5-1.0 and 1.0-1.5. 4) The trend in changes of AAI and EAI are consistent. Finally, according to the EAI and SAI, the research classiifed 18 corn producing provinces into four categories: "double low provinces", "efifciency advantage provinces", "scale advantage provinces", and "double high provinces". And this paper also provides some targeted suggestions for each category.
