Evidence of Immunologic Injury in Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss:Down Regulation of Serum MMP-9 Expression and Its Significance

Abstract
Objective Matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) has been shown to be associated with immune injury in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). This study aims to test the concentration of serum MMP-9 in patients with sud-den sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) and to investigate whether there is a similar MMP-9 associated injury mecha-nism in this disease. Methods Forty-three patients with SSNHL and 23 healthy volunteers were studied from November 2015 to January 2016. Serum MMP-9 was tested by ELISA. Results Average serum MMP-9 concentration was 310.85 ±218.27 ng/ml in the control group, compared with the much lower 73.45±51.59 ng/ml in the experiment group, (56.28± 39.22 ng/ml in those with low frequency SSNHL, 86.30 ± 49.91 ng/ml in those with high frequency SSNHL, 61.01 ± 47.77 ng/ml in those with flat type SSNHL, and 85.51 ± 58.69 ng/ml in those with total deafness) (H=32.526, P<0.01). Serum MMP-9 levels were not significantly different among different SSNHL types (P>0.05). Conclusions Decrease of serum MMP-9 in patients with SSNHL may be related to excessive consumption in the process of auto-immune dam-age in the inner ear. It is speculated that MMP-9 may participate in the occurrence and development of the disease via immune injury.关键词
