Abstract

The work aims to improve the cathodic disbonding resistance of ballast tank epoxy paint. With bisphenol A epoxy resin, novolac epoxy resin, C9 petroleum resin and bisphenol F epoxy resin as main film-forming resins of the paint, ad-ditive amount of the four resins were optimized by performing four factors at four levels orthogonal test. The mixed curing agent consisting of polyamide and modified phenolic amine exhibited excellent physical and chemical properties. Pigment binder ratio and additives of the paint were analyzed and studied to determine additive amount of each coating constituent. When mixing ra-tio of polyamide curing agent and modified phenolic amine curing agent was 2:1, the paint exhibited better cathodic disbonding resistance. Based upon study on different pigment binder ratios (0.75:1~1.5:1), the paint exhibited the best cathodic disbonding resistance when the pigment binder ratio was 1:1. Based upon study on film-forming resins, curing agents and pigment binder ratios, the prepared ballast tank epoxy paint exhibits excellent cathodic disbonding resistance, and can meet the anticorrosion demand of ship ballast tank. The high solid epoxy paint developed for ship ballast tank has excellent cathodic disbonding resis-tance, sea water resistance, salt fog resistance and corrosion creeping resistance.
