摘要

Abstract

To study the mechanism of current degradation of a field emission cathode,the evaporation characteristics of the CNTs emitters has been taken with a quadrupole mass spectrometer( QMS) in an ultra-high vacuum( UHV) system. It was found that the carbon started to be evaporated out from CNTs cathode when the temperature was higher than 1173 K. After continuous evaporation at 1373 K for 100 hours,the turn-on field intensity and threshold field intensity of CNTs cathode increased 21.7% and 31.7% respectively compared with their original values. Simultaneously,the field enhancement factor decreased approximately 16.2%,and the work function increased about 11.9%. The changes of surface morphology and composition before and after cathode evaporation were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer. The results confirmed that increasing the work function and reducing the field enhancement factor decrease the field emission characteristics of cathode. Therefore,the evaporation plays very important role in the current degradation for the field emission devices.
