Abstract

The condenser of a transmissive optical microscope was optimized for improving its illumination uniformity and intensity.First,the adverse impact on the image quality resulting from potential misalignment of optical axes and small aperture of a multi-lens Abbe condenser was discussed.Then,an optimized design was proposed by using a single aspheric lens to replace the multi-lens Abbe condenser to improve the uniformity and intensity of illumination system.Finally,experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of the single aspherie lens condenser on image quality.The experimental results showed that the illumination uniformity of the microscope with the optimized condenser reached 0.50% and 0.66% under objectives with 20X and 40X magnifications respectively which were about 5 times better than those of the two-spherical lens condenser.Meanwhile,the intensity of the microscope with the new condenser increased over 15% and 17% under 20X and 40X objective lenses respectively as compared to those of the two-lensed system.Therefore,the optimized illumination system with a single aspheric lens can effectively improve the image uniformity and the intensity of the microscope,which results in an image of better quality.
