Abstract
Objective:To evaluate the efficacy of a multi-vitamin/mineral(0.8 mg folic acid,PMVS)or single folic acid(0.4 mg folic acid)preparation for achieving folate threshold level(906 nmol/L)in erythrocyte in order to prevent neural tube defects(NTDs).Methods:In a single-center,randomized and controlled clinical trial,the healthy women with childbearing took either oral PMVS or single folic acid tablet once daily for 12 weeks.All subjects were randomly divided into multivitamin group (n =21)and single folic acid group (n =17).The oral multivitamin tablets containing 0.8 mg folic acid were given in the multivitamin group,and 0.4 mg single folic acid tablets were orally administered in a single group.The same course and treatment were used in the two groups.The serum folic acid,erythrocyte folic acid,serum homocysteine(Hcy)and vitamin B12 (VB12)levels were measured before and 2,4,8 and 12 weeks after treatment.Results:There was no significant difference between the two groups (P>0.05).There was a significant difference in erythrocyte folic acid concentration 4 weeks after treatment between the multivitamin group and the single folic acid group(P<0.05).In contrast to single folic acid group,more subjects in multivitamin group achieved and maintained the target threshold(906 nmol/L) (95.2% vs.58.8%,P<0.01).There was no significant difference between the two groups in the erythrocyte folic acid concentration at 2 and 8 weeks(P>0.05).The levels of serum VB12 were significantly increased in the multivitamin group(P<0.05),however,there was no any change of VB12 in the single folic acid group(P>0.05).Serum Hcy levels were decreased in both groups.The serum Hcy levels were decreased 2 weeks after treatment in the multivitamin group,while the decline was started 8 weeks after treatment in the single group(P<0.05).Conclusions:Supplementation with PMVS can achieve the erythrocyte folate threshold level for protection of NTDs very quickly,which was faster than single folic acid.Supplementation with PMVS can decrease homocysteine and increase vitamin B12,which also provides effect for prevention of birth defects.关键词
