Abstract

Due to the resource limitation of coalbed methane (CBM), its recovery factor is low and payback period is long. Besides, its related technologies are developed slowly. And consequently, the exploration and development progress of CBM industry is restricted seriously. Therefore, it is necessary to innovate and improve technological effects and optimize resource allocation. It is indicated from the analysis that geo-steering modeling technique can instruct geo-steering operation effectively to enhance development effectiveness of horizontal wells. In this paper, the workflow of geo-steering modeling based on the concept of Model-Compare-Update was introduced from the aspect of geo-steering technologies that are commonly used in China. The most common issues of current horizontal well geo-steering were solved by analyzing the actual cases encountered during the development of Hedong CBM Block, and the corresponding optimization plans were proposed. The development effects of 13 multi-lateral horizontal wells implemented in 2016 were analyzed. It is indicated that geo-steering modeling technique can improve drilling quality, and then increase the productivity. The Geo-steering modeling technique enhances the integrated development efficiency of horizontal wells and provides the technical guarantee for the construction of the block.
